Storyboard Completed: Upload

We have finished our storyboard only a few minutes ago. In doing this, we have listed the camera angle and positioning from where certain shots will be filmed. Also in certain sections, we have entailed the lyrics of the song in order to piece together when the camera shots should change onto the next etc.

It is possible that in the future, the group may decide to change the camera angle or even the sequencing of the video as there may be complications in filming and being able to link the different shots together. We want to make sure that we effectively portray the artists scandalous and care free nature in the video.

Meeting: Storyboard

We are currently having a meeting about our storyboard and how we are planning to start it. We are not sure on how we should begin the video as there are so many different, effective ways to portray the artist. We can not decide whether to start the video with a tracking shot of the artists feet or a point of view shot following the artist whilst breaking the 180 degree rule.

We finally decided to do the point of view shot following the artist whilst breaking the 180 degree rule. This was because of the image and persona that we wanted to create about the artist such as her being ruthless and doing as she pleases, linking to the idea of her breaking the 180 degree rule.

Finished lip syncing exercise:

As a group, we found the exercise challenging as it was hard at first as we did not know how to use the editing program. However, we soon found out how to use the program through our own research and therefore, we completed the video successfully. We now know how to use the program coherently when it comes to our real music video and we now also know the different features of what Final Cut can do, allowing us to enhance our ideas for our real music video.

Idea

Natasha D,

This is just an idea, as our theme is interrogation, I realised that the iconic scene in the James Bond movie with the guy in the seat with a cat would fit in nicely with our theme.
I thought we could have a girl version to make the artist seem intimidating. However, instead of a cat, we should have a dog, because small dogs are associated with women. We need to make sure that the artist is in a suit and a leather chair so that it is clear that we are using intertextuality.
We could use this is one of the later verses?

During the Lipsyncing Exercise

Our lipsyncing activity was based on the song "Telephone" by Lady Gaga. During filming and when importing the video, we had difficulty uploading the video onto the computer as the tape got jammed in the camera. Therefore, we have learnt to film the video and then import the video onto the computer straight away. During the lipsyncing video, some members of the group learnt that we had to film at least a minute for each shot to successfully edit the video.

Audience:

The audience that we want to target is 14 to 19 year olds and mainly female. We decided to choose this target audience because the music of the song is a typical mainstream pop song, which would be aimed at mid - schoolers who would listen to this sort of music based on what other people are listening too, e.g. pop being a mainstream genre. Therefore, the psychographic of the target audience would be that they are interested in fashion, magazines and social sites which links to the idea of the target audience doing everything based on what's popular at the time.

Treatment : Outline of video sequence

This is the treatment for the music video song that our group have decided to do. Linking to the annotations of the lyrics, the treatment below is the outline of how our music video will look and the foundations that we will follow in adding more detail to it in terms of camera angles and specific places to film.

Treatment plan

We printed out a copy of the song "Kiss'n'Tell" by Kesha and we decided to annotate the copy. We decided what things we shall do on certain points of the song such as what happens to the narrative and how it progresses.

Idea response:

Tash M,

Yes, our artist definitely needs something unique about her that the audience can relate to and notice. How about something relating to her hair or her makeup? Maybe a pattern or style that can be put on her face? Or her hair can be made really outrageous of some sort?

Also, we need to start thinking of suitable names for the artist? We need to make sure that its feminine, catchy and sounds unique like many pop artists in the industry.

Ideas

Hey Tasha D,
I was thinking of the kind of image that we want our artist to have. How about a care free girl who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go for it. Also, a theme is needed, like you know how Kesha's theme is glitter and Lady Gaga uses themes to make herself iconic.

What do you think?

Meeting: Treatment for song

We are having a meeting about the song we are planning to do "Kiss'n'Tell" by Kesha. We decided to do the song because there currently is no video for it. We are deciding where we can shoot the video, the amount of people we need and the different camera shots we are going to use at certain points in the song. For us to fulfill this, we are annotating a copy of the songs lyrics and deciding what to do at certain points

"Kiss n Tell" Ideas:

I decided to do a brainstorm of the the song "Kiss n Tell" as we could not decide what song to do. After brainstorming the ideas, i showed it to my group to see if they thought the ideas would be suitable to work on, which they accepted and felt would be suitable.

Meeting: Lip syncing

We are having a meeting now, discussing what song we shall pick for our lip syncing exercise. While we are discussing the song choice, we have to make sure that the song fits all the criteria, such as:

  • The song must be under 3 minutes
  • There should not be many bridges (pauses) in the song
  • A song with a fast beat so that when it comes to the editing process, we will be able to have fast cuts

We have decided to do either "You've got the love" by Florence and the Machine, "You really got me" by Belle Amie or "Telephone" by Lady Gaga. Eventually, we decided to do "Telephone" as we thought that we could achieve fast cuts and was a song that we knew the words to easily, therefore, it fitted the criteria.

'Backstabber' Ideas

We have each done a proposal of our chosen song. This is my brainstorm of the song choice 'Backstabber'. I have thought carefully of our audience and the genre, and this is what I have produced. Obviously, this is just a simple plan however, we could build on this to create a better video.

Song Choice

Although we know we want to do a song of a pop genre, we are still debating on which song to do. We want to do a song by a female artist as we think it would be easier to star in the video ourselves as we know we would be dedicated to show up on filming dates and not have to rely on other people.
We are looking at songs by artists such as:
  • Ke$ha
  • Lady GaGa
  • Beyonce
  • Taylor Swift
  • Rihanna
  • VV Brown
  • Katy Perry etc
We decided Ke$ha was a great artist to use as her music has good beats in it so we would be able to make the editing fun and fast. We looked at her 'Animal' album. We crossed off the ones that had already been made into a video and our favourites from the ones left were:
  • Kiss N' Tell
  • Backstabber
  • Party at a Rich Dude's House
  • Dinosaur
  • Boots and Boys
We cut it down to Kiss N Tell and Backstabber. We will each do a proposal for one and then chose which one we think has the best prospects.

Genre Choice: Pop

We chose to do a pop music video because we both particularly like listening to pop music and we thought a pop song would make the best sort of music video as we have liked other pop music videos. We felt that pop music enabled a music video to have different codes and conventions from all other genre's as it's quite mainstream. However the main codes and conventions of a pop music video are:

- a narrative mixed with a performance
- the artist is usually in both
- cuts on the beat
- bright colours
- a 'happy-go-lucky' feel to it
- dancing

We don't want a cheesy pop song but we want something catchy with a video that can be remembered (in a good way).

Introduction to our Project

The aim of our project is to produce a successful music video, CD cover and MySpace or web page to market our artist. On this blog we will be researching current music videos, CD covers and MySpace pages to use the typical codes and conventions used so we can use them or break them in our own. We want our artist to stand out by fulfilling this through creative idea's.

We have already decided that the genre we are going to do is pop as we feel we can relate to it as we are a group that listens to a lot of pop and we are all girls therefore, making this the most suitable decision for our group.
